Bill Frisell FIVE
Artist in Residence
A voice, a sound so consistent and true, yet seamlessly intertwining with every band. Who is it? Well, it's Bill Frisell. This time with two trios simultaneously
AIR-pass including all AIR's concerts
This one, multidimensional sound, yes. Taking that into consideration, it's not surprising that Frisell has navigated through a variety of very different constellations. Sometimes (but not always) the same people, in different bands. Different sounds. Whether it's collaborations with John Zorn, Jan Garbarek, Paul Motian, Ernst Reijseger, in solo format, or with the musicians playing in his new project, FIVE.
He has been inspired by everything from The Beatles to Tristano, and perhaps particularly American folk music. Yet, it's the same, true Bill at the core. There's warmth, sympathetic tones that mean you well. A gentle humor that doesn't shy away from playful teasing. Or sudden "Boos!"
The NY Times has said that Frisell has a knack for "putting high concept into a humble package," and that's quite descriptive. The music is accessible, but rarely simplified. It's always (modestly) poetic.
When describing his new band FIVE, even that can be read as poetry:
WORDS ON FIVE FROM BILL I've been dreaming of this for a long long time. Kenny Wollesen, Tony Scherr, and I have a long long history playing as a trio. Rudy Royston, Thomas Morgan, and I have a long long history playing as a trio. I've played trio with Rudy and Tony. I've played trio with Kenny and Thomas. I've played duets with all of them. They are my friends, my teachers, my heroes. Every moment a joy and inspiration.
In the concert video below, from Arts Center at Duck Creek, the emcee says, "Bill Frisell has changed the way American music sounds over the past 40 years." An indisputable source of inspiration. There's no reason to believe that this deep-seated transformation is still not ongoing, which is why FIVE must be heard live.
Concerts in our main program typically last between 60 to 90 minutes.
