Dirty jazz, cheeky fusion, or "high-octane pop?
Since 2009, the Swedes in the power trio - or should we say phenomenon - Dirty Loops have been wreaking havoc on both the internet and concert stages on a large scale. With their plethora of key signatures, time signatures, and syncopations, they are a kaleidoscope of musical references.
For instance, their extreme arrangements of existing songs like Rihanna's "Rude Boy" or Lady Gaga's "Just Dance," but also their own mind-blowing compositions. Notable is the song "Hit Me," which was part of their major breakthrough on the album "Loopified" (2014). After this, the band took a six-year hiatus before releasing the album "Phoenix" (2020). Shortly after this came "Turbo" (2021), a collaboration with Vulfpeck guitarist Cory Wong, who visited Moldejazz most recently in 2022.
Like bands in the same segment, such as Vulfpeck or Snarky Puppy, Dirty Loops infuse plenty of humor into their music. Even though they play with full seriousness, the songs are served with a twinkle in the eye. Perhaps for the same reason, there are many strong opinions about the band, both positive and negative. However, it is beyond doubt that the musicians in Dirty Loops have instrumental skills at an indisputably shocking high level, and a correspondingly unrestrained joy of playing.
On March 8th of this year, Dirty Loops released their first single in many years, "Run Away." Thick with 80s romance, with an obvious homage to bands like Van Halen, Toto, and Dream Theater. Over such a power-rock foundation lies vocals that bring to mind both Justin Bieber and Stevie Wonder. Furthermore, they deliver rhythmically shifting passages, crazy sounds that could just as easily have come from video games like Street Fighter (insert ORCH2 sample), and a bass-neck-breaking solo.
On Instagram, they chose to promote the single with a pink picture of a capybara. And as you know, capybaras are friends with everyone.

In the wake of neo-soul successes like Fieh and Rohey - hailing respectively from the student environments in Oslo and Trondheim - we have recently had the pleasure of a collective jaw-dropping experience from the Bergen-based Atari
Bittersweet soul bomb
The band, which met at Grieg Academy, has described themselves as "ambitious and crazy music students." Like the aforementioned bands, their music has strong references to Hiatus Kaiyote (who happen to have a song called "Atari"). Otherwise, they could also share an audience with artists like Neon Ion and Charlotte Dos Santos.
However, if we are to detach ourselves from specific comparisons, in Atari's music, you can hear frequent elements of Rhodes, broken-beat rhythms, quirky synths with distortion and microtonal layers, peculiar rhythmic shifts. There are also plenty of wistful and warm guitar riffs, melancholic vocals, and grooves that drive it all forward even when they are oh so sluggish.
Since their inception in 2020, the band has released several singles and the full-length album "Sweet and Sour" (2023), in addition to thrilling concert-goers at events like Nattjazz, Vill, Vill Vest, and Trondheim Calling.
Atari takes neo-soul as we know it, tosses it in the drum along with red socks, and sets it to high centrifugation. If you want to smell the sweet summer air and let your heart vibrate in time with the alluring and movement-inducing sounds from the young jazz's relatives, then you should head to Atari during Moldejazz 2024.
