Bill Frisell Trio & Immanuel Wilkins
Artist in Residence
One great musician with small sounds. Three great musicians with small sounds, and a young sound. It becomes exceptionally great music. Warm, airy tones that greet you like an old friend
Even though during this year's festival, we'll have the pleasure of hearing Frisell explore a variety of ensemble types and sizes, it's essential to note his work in trios. He brings both his trios in FIVE and the same trio as here, in the opening concert.
Perhaps the trio format is what we've heard him work in the most? And that's not surprising. In the trio format, there's the opportunity to lean on others, but also to create friction, a greater degree of randomness, while still leaving enough room for everyone to breathe. You can follow each other quickly, and over time...
Frisell, Morgan, and Royston have been following each other for a long time, and they are perhaps equally humble and witty. Incredibly responsive, but also full of captivating twists and turns. Ones you don't expect because they make you so relaxed, before you suddenly perk up! And then sink back into your seat again.
Joining them for this concert is the fireworks, Immanuel Wilkins – alto saxophonist, composer, and arranger from Philadelphia. He has previously released the albums Omega (2020) and The 7th Hand (2022), both on Blue Note Records, and has toured with the Bill Frisell trio on several occasions.
If you need something to charge you up, come and listen to the Bill Frisell Trio Plus One.
