Stian Carstensen & Ola Kvernberg

Two of the country's foremost and most beloved jazz- and beyond musicians must have the largest indoor arena at Moldejazz when they visit the festival. Ola on the fiddle and Stian on the accordion are just a taste of what the audience will hear. There might be a bit of a rock vibe when one of them – or both – picks up the electric guitar. Or Stian colors melodic passages with his incomparable steel guitar playing, while Ola brings out the viola or shows that he is also an excellent pianist. A concert with these master musicians includes spontaneous musical antics that keep both performers and the audience on their toes. Sometimes they also bring in exciting unannounced guests who contribute to the experience.

Ola from Fræna and Stian from Eidsvoll have truly found each other in a duo collaboration that is all too rare to experience because both are busy with so many other projects, from their own bands and major works to film music and much more. Therefore, it is an event when they manage to bring both together in an open setting where they can be spontaneous and do whatever comes to mind. The openness they both represent is fantastically described by Lars Elling in the book "Ved porten av stillhetens skog" ("At the Gate of the Forest of Silence"), which will be released in April (excerpt from Jazznytt, spring 2004):

"...with Stian, I experienced the musical equivalent of my own brain's disobedience: he was deep into Beethoven, and suddenly, via a mysterious association, he stumbled into 'Fugledansen,' which, through a sudden syncopation, turned into 'Take on Me... I heard, through all the baroque whims, that melodies and riffs are a historical and cultural common property. Something everyone has access to."

Note! This cultural common property means that on this special occasion, Ola and Stian have decided that the audience should also contribute! They get to make wishes about what to play. Not all the time, but in a special segment of the concert, some lucky ones will have their musical wishes fulfilled.
