Hans P. Kjorstad & Ernst Reijseger
Insight into an Exciting Musical Universe
Many are likely familiar with the fiddler Hans P. Kjorstad and the Dutch cellist Ernst Reijseger from various projects. As a duo, they are new, and we are excited that they will present this project at Molde Cathedral.
The music we will experience during Moldejazz 2024 is based on the release "Gap of Ginn," recorded in the beautiful Høyjord Stave Church in Sandefjord municipality. The music on the album is improvised, and we hear the personalities of the musicians in their interplay. Kjorstad and Reijseger have found a common repertoire consisting of melodic improvisation with air and tension. The instrumentation is also somewhat unique: 5-string cello, shruti box, fiddle, 5-string Hardanger fiddle, and tuned Indian harmonium. This is exciting!
Reijseger is best known as an avant-garde musician with roots in free improvisation and contemporary music, working both as a musician and composer. As a composer, he has explored the connection between sound and image, composing music for numerous films, including those for Werner Herzog. Ernst Reijseger is also involved in several world music projects, giving him an intriguing musical language. "He is a magnificent cellist, and he can do anything, anything on his cello. He could play the civil war, the American Civil War on his cello." —Werner Herzog
Reijseger has visited Moldejazz several times in the 90s and 2000s with projects such as Misha Mengelberg ICP ORCH featuring Han Bennik, performing duo concerts with David Darling and Louis Sclavis, and later with Norwegian projects like Stian Carstensen with Håvard Wiik, Arve Henriksen, and Jarle Vespestad. The last time Reijseger was in Molde was in 2007 when he played with the band Turanga.
Hans P. Kjorstad is a central and highly active musician in the Norwegian jazz and folk music scene. Known for several exciting projects, including his collaboration with his brother Rasmus in the Kjorstad Brothers. He can also be found collaborating with musicians such as the Swedish bassist Egil Kalman, Norwegian Andreas Røysum Ensemble, Marthe Lea Band, Frode Haltli Avantfolk, Billy Meier, and Reolo with musicians like Anders Røine, Rasmus Kjorstad, and Hans Hulbækmo.
